Bird Nest Snowy Mooncake & Four Yolks Mooncake - Happy Mid Autumn Festival

It's that time of the year again...
Where it's balmy, typhooney and rainy...
Where the weather is nothing like autumn...
...and we're bombarded with 24-7 mooncake ads everywhere,
we might get sick of mooncakes before we even tried any.

Last year, I made a big deal outta Mid Autumn Festival.
I tried ram horn nuts for the first time, went to a huge lantern festival, carried around cute lanterns, lit candles, consumed mooncakes in a moon lit (with super bright, glaring street lights - this is Hong Kong after all) park, and all that jazz.
This year, I haven't got any plans laid out yet, but in terms of mooncakes, I am all prepared!
I received a couple Premium Bird Nest Snowy Skin Mooncakes (from Tai Pan), a gift from sous chef's mom. In hot weather, snowy skin mooncakes are your best bet. The skin is wonderfully soft and chewy, the mashed bean filling is light and sweet, and the bird nest is....not a big deal as bird nest is pretty much flavorless and there's not a whole lotta it for me to enjoy the texture.

There are lots of mooncake selections out there, but for a classic mooncake, I always love Maxim's.
They're reliable and consistent (am I describing mooncakes or an investment bank?)...rich and flavorful. Just look at how beautiful they are...

This one is the ultimate classic mooncake, thin skin baked to perfection, satiny smooth lotus paste filling, and oh mama....four salted egg yolks!

Hello cholesterol...
Happy Mid Autumn Festival!

Oh mooncakes, I ate too many mooncakes when I was young, and now whenever I see mooncakes, I feel stuffed, hahahaha.

  6. Wow! These look so yummy? Are they really hard to make? I'm sure there's a bunch of ingredients that I could never find here...

  7. I like Maxims moon cakes too! I think I have probably seen the 4 egg yolk one once and actually eaten it. Is it the really large one that is larger than the 2 egg yolk mooncakes?

And I've never heard of bird nest mooncakes before. I did however recently see some Maxim ice cream mooncakes which tasted like mung bean. Those were interesting.

  8. They look delish!! However, I still miss the traditional Indonesian style (?) tong cu pia with Chocolate & cashews filling, Cheese, Durian, Ba' Pia, Raisins... oh I am drooling as I type these. Do you know what I am referring to?

  9. tigerfish and locm...i used to hate the yolks...now i love them! hehe, so, never too much yolks for me

rc, yeah...let's not worry about cholesterol until we absolutely have to hehe

cakelaw...i am curious...what kinda mooncakes do you have in melbourne? i think hong kong brands might be available in chinatown..

ffichiban and kenny, hehe...indeed! this year, a friend of mine had to hard sell the FREE mooncakes to get some colleagues to take some. nobody wanted them!

dianais, i am sure they aren't so hard to make...but they are abundantly available here, so i am too lazy to even try :)

ETE, yes the ones with 4 yolks are super dense, but not larger. this year i tried the snowy skin mooncakes from taipan instead of maxim. i think taipan was the pioneer.

tuty, oh gosh...the ones with cashew and chocolate filling? gimme some of that! ^_^

  11. I had Snowy mooncake when I went to HK this year and it was yummyyyyyy (I had the mango one).

I'm from Sydney and I wish that they export it there because I don't think I can find it in Australia.

I wonder if Snowy mooncake is only avialable during Mid Autumn festival only? (I ask such a silly question, d'oh!!). I need to make sure that when I visit HK next time, it has to be around Mid Autumn festival so I can have the snowy mooncake again :)
