Disastrous Oatmeal Cookies - Beware of Paper Cuts

ARRRRRGGGGHHHHHHH!!!! #$%^&*&^%$#$%^&!!!!! (Insert an "expression" from a language of your choice here. You can adjust the mildness too, ranging from "oh, shoot!" to "oh, F! F! F! F!!!")

What Happened?
The cookies were stuck to the paper! The bond between them is definitely stronger and tighter than those of most Hollywood' love stories. They were inseparable! I've tried everything from peeling the cookies gently off the paper...to...breaking off the cookies in a barbaric manner (I heard my neighbor's dog whimpering with fear)....nothing worked! Since I didn't want to waste the cookies...I ate some of them anyway. I tried to spit out most the paper, but I guess I ended up eating most of it HAHA! Errr....yum? I am all for carbs, but I am not a big fan of this one. But, hey, isn't paper healthy (that would explain why I don't like it)? Anytime you need a new source of fibre...you might want to try this (thanks for the info, Lidia!)

What Went Wrong?
The main cause of the incident was: my poor ability to follow recipe and my lack of attention to detail. The recipe (thanks again for forwarding the website to me, Lid!) says "Drop by large spoonfuls onto lightly greased cookie sheets, leaving space"...and guess which dumbass completely missed the phrase and did NOT grease the cookie sheets?

I am not even sure if I was using the right paper. Which paper should it be? Parchment paper? Baking paper? Fancy paper? Newspaper? Art paper? A4/A3/letter? All I did was storming into a cooking/baking supply shop and asked for a pack of "paper which is normally used to bake cookies". I should've probably done more research on the paper. Oh well, coulda woulda shoulda.

Despite the unwanted extra fibre, the cookies were actually great! Simple, easy, and yummy. A little too sweet for my taste, I'll reduce the sugar by half next time.
Chewy Oatmeal Cookies
Recipe
from http://www.lowiodinerecipes.com/
- 2 cups rolled oats (raw)
- 1 cups sugar
- 1/2 tsp plain salt
- 1 tsp vanilla
- 1/3 cup olive oil
- 2 egg whites

Preheat oven to 180C. Mix all dry ingredients, mix all wet ingredients separately, combine them, mix well, chill mixture for a couple of hours. Drop by large spoonfulsonto lightly greased cookie sheets (don't do what I did), leaving space. Bake until the outsides are golden and crunchy. Next time, I'll add some raisins and roughly chopped peanuts.

If you'd excuse me, there's still a can full of "fibre rich" cookies I need to attend to. Sob sob.

Wanna see how dumb I've been? Check out more of my foodisasters!

  5. Usually *cookie sheets* are the actual baking tray, so the instructions referred to greasing the tray and not sheets of paper. I have always had good luck baking cookies on parchment paper though. I started lining my cookie sheets with parchment paper for all cookies to save on cleaning time (lazy me!).

  6. Hmm...I've never had any problem with baking paper with cookies. Never oiled them but they turned out fine. I guess it depends on the oil content of the bake mix.

Anyhow, don't worry about eating paper. I've ate paper of Char Siu Buns and other paper stuck on buns. There's worse stuff out there than paper... We'll be right.

  11. Youd didnt use wax paper did you. Normally parchement paper doesnt even require on to butter the sheet. Weird. But from the surface they look great and chewy.

  12. First time hearing that cookies got stuck on baking paper, usually it won't. Perhaps too much sugar and when heated, it stuck to the paper.

  13. lol... i love reading your experiences, made me really smile... maybe the paper made it more chewy? :) just kidding, i'm sure minus the paper, the cookies were great... :)

  14. Oh I'm sorry. I hate that feeling of realizing I did something wrong that messed up the recipe. Though sometimes it's good like when I accidentally used 1 cup instead of 1/2 cup of butter in my meltaway cookies, they REALLY melted in your mouth. So good!

  15. Yikes, I hate when stuff like that happens!

  16. LOL, but seriously, the cookies look good and eating a little paper won't do any harm.:)

For extra sugary and sticky cookies I use Silpat or parchment paper. I once used (un)waxed paper and I had the same disaster.

  21. Use parchment paper next time!
Or ask your boyfriend to buy you a nonstick baking sheet for Christmas. :-)

So talk to me more about chewing on paper cookies. I find it fascinating. hahaha.

  24. i use parchment paper a lot for baking, if my cookie sheet is a non-stick one. (cookie sheet refers to the pan)... or if you can, invest in Silpat liners. They're a very good investment. Your cookies still look good though...!

  25. I've never had cookies stick to parchment paper. Weird. It doesn't look like you did anything wrong!

  27. Hey, at least the cookies tasted good, even if they came with extra fibre.I hope the shop sold you baking paper, not greaseproof paper or something like that!

  28. I have a question. I'm going to make these cookies, do you use white or brown sugar?
